The legendary
Stanley Turrentine is showcased in his first-ever video concert. For more than 30 years, Turrentine's warm, masculine tenor sax sound has been heard on his distinctive recordings, as well as on those of
Ray Charles, Shirley Scott, Max Roach and
Jimmy Smith.
One of the first jazz "crossover" artists, Turrentine has been a best-seller for decades, playing everything from pop to funk. Now, in this intimate concert taped at New York's Village Gate, Stanley & Co. swing on such standards as Rodgers & Hart's My Romance, Milton Nascimento's Salt Song, and Turrentine's own Sugar among others.
The concert hits a peak with a stirring performance of John Coltrane's monumental "Impressions," on which Turrentine proves his mastery of jazz improvisation.
